How GiftPlume Works

This page explains where the gift ideas come from, how the Gift Finder ranks them, what the match score means and how the site makes money. Nothing here is secret, and nothing is paid placement.

The idea bank

GiftPlume has a bank of about 362 gift ideas. Each idea is a type of gift, written without brand names or prices. For every idea we record who it suits, the occasions it fits, the interests and personality it matches, its style (an experience, something to eat or drink, something handmade, a practical tool and so on), the budget bands it realistically falls in, how much effort it takes, whether it can be mailed and whether it works at the last minute. Every idea has to work for at least two kinds of people and two occasions.

The budget bands describe what you spend, not what a product costs: under $25, $25 to $50, $50 to $100, $100 to $250 and over $250. An idea can sit in more than one band, because a cooking class or a framed print can be modest or lavish.

How the Gift Finder ranks ideas

The finder first removes ideas that cannot work, then scores the rest from 0 to 100.

What gets removed

  • Budget. If you pick a band, only ideas in that band stay. Tick “or less” and cheaper bands stay too.
  • Needs to ship. Only ideas that can go in the mail stay.
  • Last minute. Only ideas you can sort out in a day or two stay.
  • Easy only. Only grab-and-go ideas stay. Ideas that need booking, planning or making are removed.

How the points add up

  • Who it is for, up to 35 points. An idea written for that person gets 35. An idea marked as fine for anyone gets 22. Anything else gets 0. If you do not pick a person, every idea gets 18.
  • Occasion, up to 20 points. An idea that fits the occasion gets 20. A “just because” idea, which works any time, gets 8. If you do not pick an occasion, every idea gets 10.
  • Interests, up to 20 points. Two or more shared interests get 20, one gets 16, none gets 0. With no interests picked, every idea gets 10.
  • Personality, up to 10 points. A match gets 10, no match gets 0, and no personality picked gives every idea 5.
  • Effort, up to 5 points. Grab-and-go ideas get 5, ideas with a little effort get 4, ideas that need real planning get 2.
  • Variety, up to 10 points. The finder builds the list one idea at a time. An idea whose style is not on the list yet gets 10, a style that is there once gets 5, and a style that is there twice or more gets 0. That way the top of the list mixes experiences, keepsakes, treats and practical things instead of showing twelve of one kind.

Ties keep the order of the idea bank, so the same answers always give the same list. That is what makes a shared link show the same ideas to someone else.

When the list is too short

If fewer than six ideas pass the filters and fit the person, the finder loosens the filters one at a time until there are enough: first “last minute”, then “needs to ship”, then “easy only”, then the budget widens to the next band, and finally any budget. The page tells you which ones it loosened, so you are never shown a looser list without knowing.

Your list and your privacy

The finder runs in your browser. Your answers are kept in the address bar, so you can bookmark or share them. Saved and hidden ideas are stored in your browser’s local storage, never on our server. The Privacy Policy has the details.

How GiftPlume makes money

There are no sponsored ideas and no paid placements. Some links may be affiliate links: a few ideas can carry “Where to buy” links to stores, and if you buy through one, GiftPlume may earn a small commission at no cost to you. Those links are marked on the page, and they never change the ranking. The score above is the whole ranking. Later the site may also show ads.
