White Elephant Gift Ideas

Gifts people fight to steal, within the cap.

By June Calloway · Updated

A white elephant exchange, also called Yankee swap or Dirty Santa, is a game first and a gift exchange second. Everyone brings one wrapped gift under a spending cap. Players draw numbers, then take turns either opening a new gift or stealing one already opened. Most groups limit how many times one gift can be stolen. The fun comes from the trading, so the best gifts are the ones people want to steal. That means something with a laugh built in and a real use behind it: a box that switches itself off, a hot sauce sampler with dramatic names, a mushroom kit that grows on the counter, a ramen night bundle people fight over. Pure junk is the classic mistake. A regifted candle from the back of the closet or an empty box as a prank gets a laugh for one second, then someone goes home with it. Do not be that person. Avoid anything crude at work, anything that mocks a group of people and anything that only makes sense to you. Stay near the cap so the game feels fair. Ideas below are grouped by common caps.

Common mistakes

  • Regifted junk or a literal empty box
  • Crude or offensive gifts, especially at work
  • Inside jokes only you understand
  • Going far over the cap and turning the game into a contest

Something small and good, like a gift card or candy, wrapped in layer after layer, each with a joke note. In a white elephant swap, the unwrapping is the entire show.

Timing

Most white elephant games happen at December office parties or family gatherings, but they work any time of year. Hosts should share the cap and rules at least two weeks ahead. Buy and wrap a few days early so you are not stuck grabbing something sad at a gas station. If you mail-order, allow a week or more in December.

Etiquette

The host sets the cap, the stealing rules and how many steals one gift can take. Everyone brings exactly one gift, wrapped, with no name on it. Stay near the cap. Laugh off a steal; sulking spoils the game. At work, keep gifts clean and inclusive and check what your workplace allows about alcohol. If you hate what you end up with, trade quietly with someone after the game.

Customs differ by region, family and workplace. This is what is common in the US.

Questions people ask

How does a white elephant gift exchange work?

Each player brings one wrapped gift within the spending cap. Players draw numbers. The first opens a gift; each person after that either opens a new one or steals an opened gift. If your gift is stolen, you open a new one or steal another. Most groups cap steals per gift at two or three.

What is the difference between white elephant and Secret Santa?

In Secret Santa, you buy for one specific person, often from a wish list, and the gift should be something real they want. In white elephant, gifts are anonymous and anyone could end up with yours, so funny, broadly appealing gifts fit better. Gag gifts suit white elephant, not Secret Santa.

What makes a good white elephant gift?

Something people want to steal. Funny gifts with a real use, like a gadget, a snack kit or a strange hot sauce set, do well. Gifts that suit nearly anyone beat gifts for one type of person. Avoid pure junk, crude jokes at work and anything that needs to be explained.

Is it okay to regift for white elephant?

Some groups welcome regifts as part of the fun, and some do not. Ask the host. If regifts are allowed, bring something new or nearly new that someone would want, not a cast-off. A regift that is better than store-bought, like an unused gadget, is fine. Junk is never a good look.

Save it for later

Pin it to a gift board and it will be there when the date comes round.
