For fourteen years I stood behind a department store gift-wrap counter, and I could usually tell what kind of giver someone was before they set the box down. The man with a cordless drill for his brother-in-law and a receipt already in an envelope. The woman with a shoebox of old photos who wanted tissue paper that would not crease them. The couple buying nothing at all, just a card to slip concert tickets into. None of them was doing it wrong. They were giving the way they love.

What the quiz does

Ten questions ask how you plan, what you notice about people, what kind of thanks you hope to hear and how you spend your own free time. Your answers point to one of six giver types: the Problem Solver, the Memory Keeper, the Experience Planner, the Comfort Giver, the Treat Bringer and the Maker. Each result comes with three pieces of advice and a few Gift Finder filters that match the way you like to give, so you can go straight from your result to a short list of ideas.

What it cannot tell you

It does not know the person you are shopping for, and that person matters more than your type. A born Maker can still give a store-bought gift to a friend who hates clutter. A Problem Solver buying for a sentimental grandmother may need to set the toolbox aside for a year. Think of your result as your starting instinct, not a rule.

Most of us are also a blend. You might be a Treat Bringer at the holidays and an Experience Planner for birthdays. If two results feel close, they probably are. Take the quiz again with a specific person in mind and see whether the answer shifts.

How to use your giver type

Lean on your strength, then check it against the person. If you love giving experiences, ask yourself whether this friend wants a night out or a night in. If you show love with food, find out about allergies and diets before you bake. If you are the one who makes things, start early, because handmade projects run long almost every time.

Watch for your blind spot too. Practical givers can forget the fun part. Sentimental givers can forget the person has to store the keepsake somewhere. Planners can book a date the other person cannot make. Comfort givers sometimes buy for a slower life the recipient does not live. Naming the blind spot is most of the fix.

A note on money

None of these types costs more than another. A Memory Keeper's best gift may be a letter. A Treat Bringer can do a lot with a jar of homemade granola. An Experience Planner can plan a free hike and a picnic. The Gift Finder lets you set your spending band first, then sort by style, so your type and your budget work together.

Before you start

Answer for how you give most often, not for the one big gift you are proudest of. If you keep a running list of ideas on your phone, that counts. If you usually shop the night before, that counts too. Nobody is grading this, and there is no wrong type to be. The people on your list are lucky that you care enough to wonder.
